How to use QR labels for tool inventory

A QR label works best as a fast identifier, not as a replacement for the record itself. The encoded value should stay stable even when the tool moves.

Encode the asset code

Use a stable scheme such as TL-0042. Do not encode a shelf location that will become wrong after the first move.

Choose the label position

Avoid heat, abrasion, grips, vents and surfaces regularly exposed to solvent. Keep the code flat enough for a phone or camera to focus.

Print human-readable backup

Place the asset code beside the QR when possible so a damaged label can still be entered manually.

Test at working distance

Scan labels under the light and distance found in the real shop, not only from a desk.
